Tonya Adkins-Mckeever is a West Michigan native. She later moved to Detroit, MI to study broadcast journalism at Wayne State University. However, Tonya became a staunch advocate for students with disabilities within the Detroit Public School and surrounding school districts after participating in a research project for inclusive education at the university’s Developmental Disabilities Institute. Through her meaningful work, Tonya empowered and trained parents on their rights within the school system. She also provided in-services and trainings for school personnel on the art of inclusion and curriculum modification. Zealous about promoting more inclusive communities, Tonya coordinated and led additional empowerment workshops and conferences throughout Michigan and in Toronto, Canada. Furthermore, Tonya represented families to promote inclusive education and familial empowerment in front of both state and national congressional leaders.
After 15 years, Tonya felt called to return to her native West Michigan roots where she immediately became involved in the community by giving her time to local committees, boards, and volunteer work. This work led Tonya to become actively involved in the local mission to end homelessness in Kent County. For many years Tonya managed multiple rapid rehousing and permanent supportive programming for homeless individuals, families and other vulnerable populations. Tonya then shifted her work to the Heartside district where she used her executive leadership skills to enhance service delivery and community resources for the district’s homeless population. Tonya is very passionate about diversity and inclusion, with a focus on strengthening and building healthier and stronger communities. Tonya’s professional experiences led her to the pursuit of her doctoral studies in counseling psychology in order to assist individuals and families achieve the mental and emotional wellbeing she believes we all deserve. Tonya is very excited to bring her skills and experience to help further build community with the Garfield Park Neighborhood Association.
